In 1977, the opportunity arose for 23-year old Italian migrant Mario Parisi to purchase an old run-down workshop and garage in the Outback NSW town of Cobar from the estate of an old mechanic who had run a tiny mechanical workshop and had repaired pushbikes in his semi-retirement.
Mario had already undertaken his mechanical apprenticeship with a Volkswagen/Toyota/International Truck dealer in Cobar, and had just returned from a six-month trip to visit his home country (Italy) after a stint with the Australian Gas Pipeline as a fitter. He had intended to run the workshop as a business repairing and servicing motor vehicles, but his love of motorcycles was an over-riding factor in him also opening his garage doors to anyone who required assistance with their motorcycles.
In the meantime, Mario’s younger brother Claud had finished his apprenticeship with the same Cobar dealer and had relocated to Melbourne to commence work with Detroit Diesel.
Out of the blue, Mario was offered the Kawasaki and Suzuki franchise from a local businessman in Cobar. He rang Claud and put a proposition to him that they go into a motorcycle dealership partnership. Claud jumped at the idea, as he too is a motorcycle enthusiastic, and the pair commenced trading as M & C Parisi Motorcycles in 1977, when they were aged 24 and 18 respectively.
It was not long after that, that the Cobar Yamaha dealer offered the Parisi brothers the Yamaha franchise. They discontinued the Kawasaki franchise about 15 years ago, and took on the Honda franchise about ten years ago after being approached by Honda Australia to take it on.
The business has expanded over the past 39 years from a tiny run-down corner workshop and garage, to a state-of-the-art showroom and workshop (covering some 678 square metres) which carries 70 new motorcycles and ATVs, dozens of second-hand two- and four-wheelers, a range of accessories that include helmets, gloves and boots, oils and lubricants, tyres and tubes, spare parts and other items that support the local motorcycle fraternity and agricultural clients.
